A word everyone uses and nobody defines
Spend ten minutes in any e-signature product and you will hit the word envelope — "your envelope was sent," "the envelope completed," "add a document to this envelope." It is treated as obvious, yet it rarely gets explained, which leaves newcomers quietly wondering whether an envelope is the document, the email, or something else entirely. It is none of those exactly, and once the concept clicks, a lot of e-signing stops feeling like jargon and starts making sense.
This is a short, plain definition of the envelope: what it is, what it holds, and why nearly every other e-signature idea is really a property of the envelope.
The envelope is the container, not the document
The cleanest way to think about it borrows from the paper world. A physical envelope is not a letter — it is the thing you put one or more letters into, address to someone, and send as a single sealed unit.
